SAVE PORT MANSFIELD
FUND RAISING APPEAL TO FRIENDS OF PORT MANSFIELD
All Donations Anonymous
Calling all Texans! All sport and commercial fishermen!
All lovers of the Laguna Madre and of the enchanted coastal paradise that has soothed the souls of so many!
The Concerned Citizens of Port Mansfield, Texas stood up a little more than a year ago with a goal of preventing some vain and self-centered politicians from imposing a container port on our residential harbor. Not because there are customers yammering to land their goods here -- there are none; not because there is a market for another container port sandwiched between the busy giants of Houston, Corpus Christi and Brownsville -- there is not. They are seeking a container port as a means to stay in office and to make money on real estate and construction deals that will be shielded from the public by boardroom lawyers.
We need your financial help to keep fighting!
Many of you have generously offered to send us donations, but we have not had a way to accept them with accountability. Now we do. We don’t need a lot, and we ask that you give what you can, whether it's $10, $100 or $1000. We need to build up our resources to contest the upcoming November election in which we have an opportunity to remove Chad Kinney as at-large chairman of the Willacy County Navigation District, and Ernesto “Lefty” Cavazos, who was appointed to his seat on the Board. This is the best way to stop the container port project and begin the dissolution of the Navigation District, which has done nothing for the people of Willacy County for 70 years.
We are asking not just the residents of Port Mansfield to chip in, but the thousands of anglers, hunters, bird watchers, RV travelers and retirees from all over the Rio Grande Valley and greater Texas, to send a check made out to “Save Port Mansfield” at the address below. Our accounts will be totally transparent, sharing our income and expenses every month (personal information redacted). With your help, we will successfully contest the election, publish our new newspaper, The Willacy County Examiner, and purchase needed campaign materials (signs!).
Any excess funds will go toward our effort to incorporate Port Mansfield as the newest municipality in the state of Texas. On May 6, we formally initiated the incorporation process by gathering the required signatures for a special election. Incorporation as a municipality would establish local rule in our town for the coming generations; it would establish constitutionally protected municipal powers to control land use around our Port and restore our voting rights, which were diluted in 2009.
It’s a huge challenge to take on a Navigation District which uses our taxpayer funds to hire public relations outfits and big law firms, but we have the momentum and an unrelenting determination to save this remarkable jewel on the Texas Coast from those who would make it disappear behind concertina wire and a sea of concrete.
If we all pull together, we can win, and the grandkids will thank us.
